Biography

Born in Plymouth in 1964, John was interested in painting and drawing since childhood. His ambition to be an artist was thwarted by the tragic death of his father when he was thirteen. John turned down a place at Plymouth School of Art choosing instead to go out to work to contribute to the family finances.

He kept painting and drawing in his spare time producing abstract and surreal work which was exhibited in the Plymouth area and with which he had some success. For some years he designed sea life artwork that was reproduced in print. This gave him the confidence (and income) to risk painting full time.

He moved to Banff in Scotland in 2007 where the peace and serenity of the coastal villages inspired him to produce seemingly simple line drawings of the houses and harbours. These drawings became and remain his signature style, despite a move to Spain almost ten years ago.
